"Wait on. I think Kaegi’s on to something."

"Eh!"

"We can use Kaegi to distract them while Kalki appropriates the ball."

"While he what?"

"Pinches the flaming thing."

"Well why didn’t you say so?"

"Sheesh."

"Hang on, how am I going to distract them."

"Easy. All you have to do is sit there. Seeing a major mitchell will be such a novelty they’ll all rush to look."

"What if they don’t realise he’s a major mitchell. They might think he’s a galah."

"Yeah, and if he opens his mouth they’ll be sure."

"I heard that."

"Take it easy Kaegi. He was just joking. Look, all you have to do is sit there and look all major mitchelly. There’s sure to be at least someone there with an ornithological bent."

"A what sort of bat?"

"Someone who knows birds, you dill."

"One day Rosso, one of those long words is going to get tangled up in your throat and choke you."

"All right. Cool it. It might work."

"Look Tandar, they’ve got some more balls in the shed. Why don’t we get one of those instead."

"No we want a free-range one."

"Okay, well lets get going. Kaegi you better land near the pitch so they can’t miss you."

"There he goes. Hey , it’s working. They’ve stopped to look. Where’s the ball?"

"One of them’s put it in his pocket, Tandar."

"Damn, we didn’t think of that. It’s not going to work."

"Hey, hang on, what are those pigeons doing. Look out, they’re trying to duff up Kaegi. Come on guys he needs a hand."

 

"Is everyone here. Geez, that was close. There must have been thirty of them. Talk about a stoush. Just as well we’ve got Kalki. Did you see the way he thumped into them. Way to go Kalki."

"Yeah, good one Kalki. They’ll be counting the bruises tonight."

"So will we. What the hell caused them to do that Kaegi?"

"They called me a wanker."

"Ahh. And let me guess. You said something to them."

"Well I wasn’t going to take that."

"So?"

"I told them that the most valuable part of a pigeon was the bit they left behind."

"And?"

"I mightov mentioned that marriage wasn’t a high priority for their parents."

"Nothing else?"

"It’s possible that cuckoos came into the conversation somewhere."

"WELL THANK YOU KAEGI. And for that we nearly get beaten to a pulp."

"Yeah and we didn’t get the ball."

"Oh well, we can try again next week."

"Only trouble is those pigeons will be watching out for us."

"Can’t help that Piki. For now I think we had better head home. Don’t mention any of this to Squill. It ud be a nice surprise for him if we can get a ball."
